Timber is a material that is used for a variety of structural forms such as beams, columns, trusses, girders and is also used in building systems such as piles, deck members, railway sleepers, and in formwork for concrete (NIFM Noh 2018 ). It has two main categories as either ‘softwood’ or ‘hardwood’. Hardwoods are typically used for exposed structures and claddings where durability and particular aesthetic characteristics, such as color or grain pattern, are required (Structural Timber Association 2021).
